Building Investor Grade Leadership Teams in Life Sciences (BioUK BioLearn Power Hour)

At BioUK, I recently led a Power Hour session on a topic that deserves more attention: leadership alignment as a driver of success in biotech and medtech.

In the sector, the natural focus is on the science—and rightly so. But in my experience working with founders, boards, and investors, many companies don’t fail because the science is weak. They struggle because leadership doesn’t evolve as the business scales.

The reality of growth - What works at Seed or Series A often becomes a constraint at Series B or beyond.

Early-stage strengths—scientific depth, agility, hands-on leadership—are essential. But as companies grow, the challenge shifts toward:

  • governance and investor readiness

  • operational discipline

  • commercial capability

  • leading at scale

Leadership needs change long before titles do.

A simple test

I often use one question with leadership teams:

👉 Are we optimised for today—or for what’s coming next?

Most teams are strong in the “now.” Gaps appear in what I call in the presentation, Horizon Two— scaling, structure, and execution at complexity.

The warning signs

Before things go wrong, the signals are usually there:

  • decision bottlenecks

  • delivery slipping despite strong science

  • difficulty landing senior hires

  • investor concerns around “capability”

This isn’t a talent issue. It’s a timing and alignment issue.

What the best companies do differently...
